I AM NOT A HRM MAJOR
We welcome students of all major; business or non-business. The SHRM Aloha Chapter is for students who want access to resources which allow making new life-long friendships, having fun, career development, networking with professionals and especially HR recruiters in Hawaii’s business community, and overall, personal and professional development. We strongly believe everyone should be given the opportunity to learn about HR since HR professionals are the first people you will interact with prior to getting hired.
I AM A FRESHMEN
It’s never too early to become more involved with school. Being able to network with students and professionals will just simply provide you with more opportunities as you progress through college and life after graduation. The SHRM Aloha Chapter strives to provide professional development for its student members. Our group company tours will allow you to experience and learn about large professional organizations located in Honolulu. These companies could be your future employers. Another way we help prepare students is by coordinating mock interviews conducted by REAL professionals. This helps students to become more comfortable with the interviewing process, and again, could lead to prospective internship and/or employment opportunities.
I AM SHY
That’s okay! A great experience of college is meeting new people. The application process ensures that you will be surrounded by quality individuals. The SHRM Aloha Chapter is focused on being able to provide a fun and friendly professional growing experience for students.
ACTIVE STATUS REQUIREMENTS
As much as we encourage our members to achieve active status, we understand that you may have other commitments as well. You’re still more than welcome to be a part of our chapter, but all membership dues will remain the same.
UNABLE TO MAKE ATTENDANCE
You’re granted one free waiver, which can replace any missed event. To redeem additional waivers, you will need to attend two “additional” events to make one waiver.
TOO BUSY FOR CLUBS
You’d definitely have to make time to meet people and network, but it’s worth it and extremely beneficial for personal and professional development – for all the great friends you make, for all the great professionals you meet, and for all the connections for advice and job referrals. It’s a worthwhile investment.
There is no set amount of time that you need to devote to the club. The executive board will provide you with numerous opportunities and it’s up to you to decide if you want to take advantage of them or not.
FEAR TO INTERACT WITH PROFESSIONALS
No worries, the officers will ensure that each member is informed, prepared, and ready before a professional event (about the kinds of questions good to ask, how to dress, everything). Networking is simple – being genuinely interested in getting to know another person.
CAREER PATH UNCERTAINTIES
At Professional Interaction Night, you will be able to talk to professionals in various industries to learn about what they do. If you do have a particular field you’re interested in, we will match you with quality professionals from companies in your field of interest who can share their career journey and offer insight and advice for your career development. Our company tours offered are also a helpful way to learn about great businesses in Hawaii’s community, interact with company executives, and get inside information about a company’s corporate culture.
We understand that not every member may be able to drive, so carpooling offered by our officers and other members will be available.
MEMBERSHIP FEES VS FUNDRAISING MONEY
The membership fee covers your spot at our Professional Interaction Night event as well as the foods that are provided at our social events. Fundraising money goes towards funding events that require renting ballrooms and catering for Professional Interaction Night, Alumni Social, other small things which allow events that promote career development to be possible.
Mock interviews are a valuable resource to SHRM members. An interview is perhaps the most important component in securing an internship or job. During the semester, SHRM will provide resume and interview workshops that will help all members get over any and all fears of doing interviews.
SHRM’s Professional Interaction Night is an amazing opportunity for professionals in Hawaii’s business community to meet and interact with our student members. During this evening event, our members are matched up with different professionals for dinner and one-on-one informational interviews based upon majors and career interests. This is a time for our student members to network and ask questions and for the professionals to meet new and incoming talent, and maybe even an opportunity to scout out potential interns and full-time hires.
